CURE's "beat cancer" playlist

BY LINDSAY RAY | JUNE 1, 2011

We asked readers on our Facebook page to suggest songs that sum up their cancer experience. We got such great responses that we decided to make a playlist to share with all of you.

Here are some of the song suggestions we received:

Becky says: "Tubthumping" by Chumbawumba for the ongoing theme "I get knocked down, but I get up again."

Sari recommends: ‎"Move Along" [by the] All American Rejects. My oldest daughter chose it as my theme through Hodgkin's and my divorce that followed. I HAVE "moved along," healthy and happy! God is good.

Shannon says: "Girl Anachronism" by the Dresden Dolls. (I was a mess.) At chemo we sang a lot of Salt-n-Pepa to keep our spirits up. Also because I was a difficult draw even with a port a cath, I would do laps around the ward doing my best "raise the roof" and "break it down" motions to get the blood flowing.

Even CURE's publisher and cancer survivor Susan McClure suggested one of her own: How about "Psycho Killer," by the Talking Heads? Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa... Better run run run run awaaaaay!

And what song would I choose? I've never experienced cancer for myself, but I do know friends and family who have had the disease. I would want to convey to my loved ones that I support them, which is why I would pick 'You've Got a Friend in Me" from Toy Story. It's upbeat and catchy with a strong message: "You've got troubles; I've got 'em too. There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you. We stick together and see it through 'cause you got a friend in me."

We picked one song from each reader and organized them by themes, such as fighting and life, which embody the scope of the cancer journey. You can check out all the song selections and download the playlist or individual songs at here.

Gotta Be by Des'ree

Listen as your day unfolds
Challenge what the future holds
Try and keep your head up to the sky
Lovers they may cause your tears
Go ahead release your fears
Stand up and be counted don't be 'shamed to cry

You gotta be, you gotta be bad
You gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together
All I know, all I know love will save the day

Herald what your mother said
Read the books your father read
Try to solve the puzzles in your own sweet time
Some may have more cash than you
Others take a different view
My, oh, my
he-eh-y

You gotta be bad
You gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together
All I know, all I know love will save the day

Time asks no questions it goes on without you
Leaving you behind if you can't stand the pace
The world keeps on spinning can't stop it if you tried to
The best part is danger staring you in the face

Remember, listen as your day unfolds
Challenge what the future holds
Try to keep your head up to the sky
Lovers they may cause your tears
Go ahead release your fears
My, oh, my
He-ey-y

You gotta be bad
You gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together
All I know, all I know love will save the day

You gotta be bad
You gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together
All I know, all I know love will save the day

Got to be bold, Got to be bad
Got to be wise, no never sad
Got to be hard, not too too hard
All I know is love will save the day

You gotta be bad
You gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together
Oooh, yeah yeah yeah

I recently found a song that expresses how I feel, given the fact that I am 8o, and have Metastatic Breast Cancer. The title is "The Best of Times", and says the best of times is now, so live and love as hard as you know how; this says exactly how I feel!

I've been fighting stage IIIb inflammatory breast cancer for the past year and am almost finished with treatment. One song that really spoke to me during treatment was "It's Not My Time" by Three Doors Down. "It's not my time, I'm not going....there's a fear in me and it's not showing...this could be the end of me and everything I know, but I won't go."

Thank you Margaret for sharing your theme song. I listened to it on youtube and it is now my theme song as I go through treatment for the third time.

I was diagnosed with an extremely rare appendix cancer 3 yrs ago and have had too many extensive abdominal surgeries to mention and chemo since then on my lowest days Whitney Houstons "One moment in time" and Bob Marley "Dont worry about a thing" were played on repeat on my ipod to get me through the darkest hours x

As a 4 year breast cancer survivor, I credit listening to music as a huge help in my recovery. I especially like the "oldies" which remind me of the most fun times and fond memories in my life. BEAT IT by Michael Jackson is one of my favorites!
